Google Search for Android will now prompt users to install a certain app if it is relevant to the user’s search content. The new feature added will please app developers as the option to install their apps will show up in Google Search itself. This change will roll out soon to Android users.
A report by Ubergizmo points out that this new feature is actually a mere extension to the App Indexing feature which was introduced by Google for app developers back in 2013. This feature allowed developers to list content from their apps on Google’s search engine. It was not proven to be helpful if the users did not have the app installed.
With the new improved feature, Google will now prompt users to install apps which offer content that they have searched for. Users will see relevant links in the Search and it will take them directly to the Google Play Store. With this new addition, app indexing will be used to help rank search results on Android, regardless of whether the app is installed.
In conversation with TechCrunch, Google principal engineer Rajan Patel said that, “The goal is for developers to continue to create great content in apps and create deep links into that content so users who have particular questions can directly access that content”.
